THE CHALLENGE

Increasing non-aeronautical revenue

An award-winning tourism gateway to Jamaica and the busiest airport on the island, Sangster International Airport (MBJ) welcomed close to 4 million people in 2016 and features world-class passenger amenities, including favourite local and national brands.

Yet, when Vantage transitioned operations from public management in 2003, the airport’s food, dining and shopping options were limited. This impacted not only the airport’s profitability, but also the passenger experience.

The Solution

As Vantage attracted new carriers and expanded MBJ’s connectivity, passenger traffic grew, and Vantage recognized an opportunity to enhance non-aeronautical revenue and improve the passenger experience.

We engaged our network of aviation experts to develop and execute a comprehensive commercial plan to boost passenger spending. The plan also supported existing businesses, such as vacation charters and hotels, looking to improve their profitability at the airport.

The Results

Through the commercial strategy, we secured new tenants—including the Caribbean’s first walk-through World Duty Free boutique—streamlined the commercial process and maximized branding and visibility in high traffic areas.

Vantage’s strategy increased revenue per enplaned passenger by 167% within one year.

With an enhanced retail offering and streamlined process between the airport and tenants, the passenger experience also improved.

MBJ has consistently been named the Caribbean’s Leading Airport by World Travel Awards and was inducted into the Director General’s Roll of Excellence by Airports Council International after ranking among the top 5 airports in its Airport Service Quality surveys for five consecutive years (2009 – 2014).
